SJS Masters

On Valentine's day, four brave Hillmen went down the hill to take on the best in the Sac Joaquin Section. The masters lived up to the hype, with everything from amazing wrestling, major drama, contested calls, and even a fire alarm. Logan Moon made his first trip to the big show, and wrestled tough against opponents that eventually made it to state. AJ Ferreira wrestled great, but ended up dislocating and fracturing his thumb. He wanted to continue, but Coach Pack decided it was best not to risk it. AJ had a really good shot at making it to state, but will be back next year. Senior Bryce Cook wrestled like a true champion, coming up just short of making it to day two of this wild tournament. The other senior in this group, Joe Valdez made the most of his opportunities. He beat opponent after opponent, even upsetting top ranked Vacaville with a take down in overtime to secure his trip to state. The whole gym was watching as the match was delayed for almost 30 minutes. In the end, the crowd was chanting PLACER, PLACER in celebration of his victory. Day two was just to decide what place he would get in the top 6, and how good his placement would be in the state tournament. Valdez went on to avenge his FVL defeat to Oakmont, winning with a take down in the final seconds. His final opponent was last years 2nd place state finisher from Oakdale. Joe wrestled well, down only by a few points until a final shot proved unsuccessful. What a fantastic finish for this young man who has worked so hard to get where he is today. On the 21st, he will begin his final stage of the journey to place top 8 at state. If you have seen Valdez wrestle lately, I would not bet against him!
