Rivalry week against the Zebras

posted Feb 1, 2018, 9:26 PM by Placer Wrestling
Rivalry week was at it's best with an electric atmosphere at Lincoln High. Lincoln was out of the running for the title and Placer had first place already sewn up, but it was senior night, and it was Lincoln against Placer--all the ingredients for a great night of wrestling. The JV action set the tone for the night, with Mason Packheiser starting it off with a 3rd period pin. Chance Clements wrestled the match of his life, fighting back and forth finally getting an escape in the last seconds for the victory. Kane Kelley earned a 5-2 decision, while Noah Cardelli eked out a last second 11-10 victory. Now it was go time for the Placer Varsity. Bryce Cook 145 and Sam Bender 152 start things off with dramatic pins to fire up the Placer squad. Christian Westphalen 160 denied his opponent the pin. Francisco (Pancho) Claudio collected a forfeit at 170. Joe Valdez 182 and Paul Banks 220 completely dominated their opponents with first round pins making the score 30-11. Colton McElroy 285, Logan (Asteroid) Moon 106 and AJ Ferreira 113 lost tough battles and suddenly the score was 30-25. The Zebra fans were in a frenzy. Gavin Sweeney 120 turned the momentum back to Placer with an amazing second round pin. Ethan Basque 126 and Tom Thornton 132 followed suit with pins of their own, putting the meet out of reach. Lincoln was not done fighting though. Their decorated senior Caleb Welsh against Placer sophomore River Rogers at 138. Arguably the most exciting match of the night. It went the distance, but in the end, Rogers and the Hillmen were just too much for the Zebras. Final score, Placer 51, Lincoln 25. Placer will be the top seed from the PVL for the team section title at Lincoln of Stockton this Saturday February 3, While Saybra Silveria and Abby Boynton travel to Natomas High for the ladies division championship.
